Weather Compass ("the App") is operated by Stephen Devoe o/a ProBuilder Software ("we", "us", "our"). We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
1. Information We Collect
Location data: When you use the App, we request your device's geographic coordinates to provide local weather, marine forecasts, air quality, radar, wildfire data, and weather alerts. Your location is sent directly to third-party weather APIs (listed below) to retrieve data. We do not store your location on our servers.
Local storage: The App saves preferences (temperature units, time format, saved places, last-viewed location) in your browser's localStorage. This data stays on your device and is never transmitted to us.
Page view data: We collect anonymous page view records (page name and timestamp) to understand how the App is used. These records contain no personally identifiable information — no IP addresses, no device IDs, no user accounts.
Contact form submissions: If you contact us through the App, we collect the name, email address, and message you provide. This information is used solely to respond to your inquiry.
2. Information We Do Not Collect
- We do not use cookies
- We do not use third-party analytics tools (no Google Analytics, no tracking pixels)
- We do not collect IP addresses
- We do not create user profiles or track you across websites
- We do not collect personal information unless you voluntarily provide it (e.g. via a contact form)
3. Third-Party Services
The App retrieves data from the following third-party services to deliver its features. Each service receives the geographic coordinates you search for or your device provides. We encourage you to review their privacy policies:
- Open-Meteo — weather forecasts, air quality, marine data, geocoding
- RainViewer — radar imagery
- NASA FIRMS — wildfire hotspot data (proxied through our server; your coordinates are sent to NASA)
- Environment Canada — Canadian weather alerts
- National Weather Service (NWS) — United States weather alerts
- Supabase — backend infrastructure for anonymous page views and server-side functions
- Firebase Hosting — static file hosting
4. How We Use Your Information
- To deliver weather, marine, air quality, radar, fire, and alert data for your chosen location
- To save your preferences locally on your device
- To understand general usage patterns (e.g. total page views) so we can improve the App
- To respond to inquiries you submit through the contact form
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, trade, or share your personal information with any third party for marketing or advertising purposes. Location coordinates are shared with the third-party APIs listed above solely to retrieve weather and related data.
6. Data Retention
Anonymous page view records are retained indefinitely for usage analysis. Contact form submissions are retained as long as necessary to address your inquiry and then deleted. Local storage data remains on your device until you clear your browser data.
7. Data Security
We use industry-standard security measures including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit. Our backend services (Supabase, Firebase) maintain their own security practices and certifications. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.
9. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Clear your local storage data at any time through your browser settings
- Deny location access through your device or browser settings
- Request deletion of any personal information you have provided to us
- Contact us with questions or concerns about your privacy
10. International Users
The App is accessible worldwide. By using the App, you consent to the transfer and processing of any information you provide to servers located in various jurisdictions. We comply with applicable data protection laws regardless of where you access the App from.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
